Program details

Overview

The Certificate in Law is a 30-unit program from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, offered in both English and French. It introduces the nature and role of legal rules that govern human activity at both the private and public levels, covering foundational legal concepts and their application. The program is explicitly not a professional law degree; it is distinct from the university's Licentiate in Law and does not qualify graduates to practise law. It functions as a standalone academic credential for students who want a structured introduction to legal study, whether for general interest, as complementary knowledge alongside another discipline, or as preparation before applying to a professional law program.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 65.00 / %
Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission to the General Certificate in Law, applicants must have completed two years of college studies (or two years at an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology), or the equivalent of one year of university study (30 units), or meet the university's definition of a mature applicant, with a minimum admission average of 65%. Up to 15 units of transfer credit may be granted for equivalent university-level coursework completed elsewhere, subject to supporting documentation, and at least half of the certificate's units (a minimum of 15) must be completed at the University of Ottawa.
