The Mathematics PhD at McMaster University is a thesis-based doctoral program in the Faculty of Science, delivered through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Students undertake original research across eight areas: algebra and number theory, analysis, applied mathematics, financial mathematics, geometry and topology, mathematical biology, mathematical logic, and probability and statistics. Each candidate works with a faculty supervisor to produce a doctoral dissertation, building on research training typically begun at the Master's level. Admission requires a Master's degree in Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline. The program is structured as a four-year, full-time course of study, with a typical intake each September. As a School of Graduate Studies program, it follows McMaster's standard doctoral milestones, including supervised research, candidacy requirements and a final thesis defence. The breadth of research areas allows students to work in pure mathematics as well as applied and interdisciplinary fields such as mathematical biology and financial mathematics, alongside faculty in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
