The Anthropology PhD at McMaster examines archaeological, biological, and cultural dimensions of human life, with faculty research spanning archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and the anthropology of culture, health and disease. The program is thesis-based and normally takes four years of full-time study. Admission typically requires completion of a Master's degree in anthropology; students who apply before finishing their MA may be admitted conditionally, pending its completion. Applicants are expected to have clearly developed intellectual and research interests and at least a tentative thesis research topic before starting the doctorate. Doctoral candidates undertake original research culminating in a dissertation within one of the department's research areas. The program admits for a September start, with a typical application deadline in mid-January, and prepares graduates for academic or applied research careers in archaeology, and socio-cultural, biological, or medical anthropology.
