Overview
Bridge Watch is an eight-month technical certificate offered by Memorial University's Marine Institute at its Ridge Road campus in St. John's. The program prepares students to obtain Transport Canada's Bridge Watch Rating Certificate, qualifying graduates to work as deckhands in the marine industry. Instruction combines classroom coursework, including General Ship Knowledge, Marine Safety and Security, and Passenger Safety Management, with hands-on training in the Institute's rigging room and aboard its training vessel. The practical component includes 60 sea days of at-sea experience. Training is delivered on campus at the Marine Institute. Intakes begin in September, with an application deadline of April 15 for domestic applicants and March 1 for international applicants. Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles such as bridge watch rating, deckhand, or offshore crew member in the marine industry.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants require a high school diploma, a Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate, a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate, or other qualifications the Marine Institute judges equivalent to high school completion. Candidates must also provide proof of physical fitness through a signed Seafarer's medical and a clear Certificate of Conduct (a certified criminal record check). The application deadline is April 15 for domestic applicants and March 1 for international applicants. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Memorial University's general undergraduate English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 per band); TOEFL iBT 83 overall (minimum 20 in Reading and Writing); CAEL 60; PTE Academic 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176; Duolingo English Test 115; or Michigan English Test (MET) 59.
