Overview

Fire Rescue is an eight-month technical certificate offered by Memorial University's Marine Institute, combining classroom instruction with hands-on training delivered in the field and at the Institute's dedicated facilities under real-life conditions. The credential awarded is a Technical Certificate in Fire Rescue. The program includes one supervised work term and covers advanced medical first response, firefighting, and technical rescue, with sample courses including Firefighter Level I and II, Fire Apparatus Driver Operator, and Rope Rescue. Instruction is led by full-time certified faculty alongside part-time fire service personnel, combining theory with applied skills practice ahead of the work term placement. Graduates are prepared for entry-level firefighting and rescue roles in municipal, industrial, or offshore fire services.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants require a high school diploma, a Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate, a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate, or other qualifications the Marine Institute judges equivalent to high school completion. Candidates must pass a medical examination, submit a Certificate of Conduct from their local police force, and hold a valid driver's licence with an air brake endorsement. The application deadline is April 15 for domestic applicants and March 1 for international applicants. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Memorial University's general undergraduate English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 per band); TOEFL iBT 83 overall (minimum 20 in Reading and Writing); CAEL 60; PTE Academic 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176; Duolingo English Test 115; or Michigan English Test (MET) 59.
