Sustainable Rural Communities Certificate

The Sustainable Rural Communities Certificate is an undergraduate credential offered through Memorial University's Grenfell Campus. It examines rurality through a critical lens, focusing on practical and theoretical approaches to sustainable rural communities and applying contemporary strategies to opportunities and challenges facing rural places, with particular attention to tourism, environment, economy, culture, and heritage in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. The certificate requires 21 credit hours, built around two core courses, an introductory course and a capstone Independent Community Project, plus 15 credit hours of electives chosen from an approved list spanning anthropology, business, environmental studies, geography, history, political science, and tourism. It may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, and at least nine of the required credit hours must be completed at Memorial University. Because of its length, regional focus, and reliance on courses offered mainly in Newfoundland and Labrador, the university does not recommend the certificate as a standalone program for international students.
