Program details

Overview

English at Mount Allison University centres on literary study, developing skills in interpretation, research, analysis, critical thinking, and persuasive writing through engagement with fiction, film, and drama. The credential is offered as a Bachelor of Arts major or honours degree, with a minor also available in any other program, delivered through traditional classroom instruction on the Sackville, New Brunswick campus. Coursework begins with an introduction to different reading and writing approaches across genres and time periods, moves in second year into literary periods, Shakespeare, and Canadian and American literature, and expands in third year into British literature across periods, gender and literature, postcolonial literature, dramatic literature, creative writing, and film and cultural studies. Fourth year offers selected-topics courses and individual faculty-supervised research, with opportunities to present and publish creative and critical work. The program suits students who want to build strong writing and analytical skills applicable across many careers, and it leads toward roles such as publisher, editor, writer, teacher, public relations specialist, or advertising executive, as well as further study in law or education.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: English's programme page sets no academic prerequisites of its own for a Bachelor of Arts and defers to Mount Allison's general admission requirements. There, decisions weigh the whole applicant — academic record, leadership, level of commitment, and potential for personal growth — with the specific courses and grades required varying by the applicant's province or country and prior education. Applicants whose language of instruction was not English must meet Mount Allison's English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 in each of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing (PTE Academic 60 with no score below 51, CAEL CE 70 with no part below 60, Cambridge English B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 with no band below 169, and Duolingo English Test 110 are also accepted). Three years of Canadian secondary schooling, or 30+ credit hours at an English-medium post-secondary institution, can also satisfy it; applicants short only on language may receive conditional admission through the university's English Summer Pathway Program.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Mount Allison uses rolling admission with no fixed general deadline: for the 2027-28 (Fall 2027) intake, early admission based on final Grade 11 marks opens 1 October 2026, general admission with mid-year Grade 12 transcripts opens in February 2027, and 1 March 2027 is the deadline to submit all application documents for admission and scholarship consideration. The deadline to accept an offer and pay the registration deposit is 1 May 2027. Bachelor of Music applicants must submit their application package by 1 February 2027, and Fine Arts (BFA/BA) applicants must submit their portfolio by 15 February 2027. International applicants follow the same published dates; Mount Allison does not publish a separate international deadline, so admission remains rolling until programs are full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
