This certificate offers flexible, foundational education rooted in Indigenous perspectives, with a broad academic base that transfers both within NVIT and to external post-secondary institutions. Communities choose courses that reflect their own interests, priorities, and goals, building a customized 30-credit plan around their specific educational aims, and, with a Dean's approval, that plan can include a specialization reflecting its particular combination of courses. To keep the program transferable, its courses must come from University Transfer department offerings, Language Fluency courses, or UT-qualifying Business courses recognized under the BC Transfer Guide, giving learners a foundation for further education or accreditation. Course selection can draw on first-year study, second-year study, or a mix of both, depending on whether prerequisite requirements are met.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry requires Grade 12 graduation or Mature Student status, English 12 or equivalent, and, because this certificate is assembled from individual courses, applicants must meet the specific prerequisites published for each course they wish to enrol in. No IELTS, TOEFL, or other standardized English-language test score is published for this program beyond the English 12 requirement. NVIT notes that applicants who do not meet requirements should contact the Department Coordinator or an Academic Planner about upgrading opportunities. The one-year certificate is offered full-time or part-time in the Fall and Spring terms. Applicants apply through Education Planner BC or a downloadable application form, following NVIT's general admissions process.
Application Details
Start Date:Fall Term, Spring Term
Application Deadline:NVIT accepts domestic applications on a rolling basis: general Fall-term applications are targeted by 31 July and Spring-term applications by 30 November each year, with offers issued in the order applications are completed and, if seats remain, continued acceptance up to the program start date. NVIT does not currently admit new international students for most programs: its Provincial Attestation Letter allocation was set at zero for 2025-2026, so new international applications are accepted only from Indigenous Peoples (per UNDRIP), Jay Treaty applicants, and permanent residents, who apply through EducationPlannerBC. NVIT publishes no international application deadline for these routes, and whether the zero-allocation restriction still holds for 2026-2027 was not confirmed on a page carrying that year. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
