Overview

The Mental Health and Substance Use Certificate is delivered jointly by Selkirk College and Northern Lights College; graduates receive the credential from Selkirk College. The program combines six online theory courses, delivered in a blended (asynchronous and synchronous) format over the first 14 weeks, with an in-person practicum of 5-6 weeks completed in the student's home community and place of hire, for a total program length of approximately six months. Coursework is organized into three modules of theory courses followed by a supervised field-work practicum. The program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundations needed to work in the multidisciplinary field of mental health and substance-use support, and is delivered online with flexible study options.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: General program admission requirements are set by Selkirk College. Northern Lights College additionally requires all students to have a current criminal record check from the Ministry of Justice, completed within 90 days of the practicum start date; some types of criminal record may limit or prohibit acceptance into field placement, which is required for program promotion. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate compliance with the Public Health Officer's orders on applicable vaccine requirements, to be completed before the practicum if the practice area requires it.
