Overview

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program provides Second Language you a pathway to academic success in post-secondary programming. By completing this program, you will meet the English entrance requirements for a variety of post-secondary programs and will enhance their communications skills for employment.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This is a language-instruction programme rather than a credential with fixed entry prerequisites: applicants are placed into one of five levels using the CaMLA EPT (English Proficiency Test) rather than screened against an IELTS/TOEFL-style admission bar. Scoring 25-26 (or lower with instructor permission) places a student into EASL 020 (Beginners); 27-40 into EASL 030 (Pre-Intermediate); 41-50 into EASL 040 (Intermediate); 51-61 into EASL 050 (Level Three); and 62 or higher into EASL 060 (Masters); completion of the preceding level also satisfies placement into the next one. Each level requires 300 hours of instruction (288 for Level Five), and a typical learner completes one level per semester. Fort St. John offers September, January, and April intakes; Dawson Creek and the online option offer a September intake only, both in full-time or part-time formats.

Application Deadline: The Spring EASL intake, which starts in April, opens for applications on 1 June of the prior year with a priority deadline of 23 December 2026 and a tuition deposit due by 31 January 2027 ahead of the April 2027 start.
