Overview
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program at Capilano University is a foundation-level, tuition-free English-language pathway for students whose first language is not English, delivered on the North Vancouver campus with full-time and part-time study options. Incoming students take a placement test that determines which of the sequenced EAP courses (EAP 050, 060, 080 and 090) they begin at, and progress through levels that build academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Coursework focuses on academic tasks such as researching and writing essays, reading textbooks and peer-reviewed articles, following lectures and note-taking, and delivering presentations based on research, alongside experiential learning in the community. The program does not lead to a vocational certification; instead, completing the required EAP levels satisfies Capilano University's English-language entry requirement for its diploma and degree programs. Intakes run in spring, summer and fall each year. The program suits international students and new residents of Canada who need to strengthen their academic English before beginning post-secondary study, as well as those upgrading English skills for work or personal interest.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry to this English-language pathway program requires BC secondary school graduation (Grade 12) or an equivalent credential, plus Capilano's own EAP Placement Test, which places each applicant into the appropriate level of study; no external IELTS, TOEFL, or similar proficiency score is required to enter, since the program itself exists to build that proficiency. No minimum grade point average, portfolio, interview, or additional supporting document is stated on the programme page or in Capilano's calendar entry. Applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC by selecting the Academic Upgrading credential and the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program, and may contact the EAP department directly with questions.
Application Details
Start Date:Fall, Spring and Summer
Application Deadline:Domestic and international applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC: the domestic application fee is $50 CAD and the international fee is $135 CAD, each covering up to two programmes. Capilano University publishes no university-wide application-opening or closing date for either group for the 2026-27 cycle; its how-to-apply pages instruct applicants to check the application and document deadlines on their chosen programme's own page, since every programme sets its own intake window there. Admission is effectively rolling at the institution level, governed programme by programme, with some programmes (for example the Health Care Assistant Certificate) publishing a fixed intake window that opens and closes months ahead of the start date. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
