Practical Nursing Diploma

Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants only, per the College's program page. Academic base: B.C. secondary-school graduation or the equivalent (Adult Basic Education or GED), or mature-applicant standing. English: at least 65 per cent in English 12, English First Peoples 12, or the provincial-level ABE English course. Mathematics: at least 60 per cent in one of Pre-Calculus 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Principles of Mathematics 11 or ABE MATH 011; alternatively 60 per cent in ABE IALG 011, or in both MATH 084 and MATH 085. Biology: both a Grade 12 biology course covering human anatomy and physiology - or Anatomy and Physiology 12, or the provincial-level ABE equivalent - at 60 per cent, and PNUR 113 (pre-Practical Nursing anatomy and physiology) at 65 per cent. Biology 12 is itself the prerequisite for PNUR 113. English-language route for applicants schooled in another language: three years of full-time, in-person secondary or post-secondary study at an accredited institution where English is both the teaching language and an official language of that country; ESL and additional-language courses do not count toward the three years. Applicants without that background take a test. The program's own calendar entry sets IELTS Academic at 7.0 overall with 7.0 in listening and speaking and 6.5 in reading and writing, or CELBAN at 9 listening, 8 speaking, 8 reading and 7 writing. The calendar's general English table lists slightly higher listening and writing bands for this program, so confirm the current band scores with Admissions before booking a test. TOEFL, CAEL, PTE and the College's own EAP route are not accepted for this program. Graduates must also meet BCCNM's separate language standard for registration. Other requirements: a criminal record check clearance through the B.C. Criminal Records Review Program - begin it only when Admissions instructs you to, and note that missing their deadline cancels the application. Before clinical practice: CPR level C; Red Cross or St. John Ambulance standard first aid; current immunisation as required by clinical partners and recommended by the BC Centre for Disease Control (diphtheria and tetanus, polio, hepatitis B, MMR, varicella and influenza); a negative tuberculosis skin test or chest x-ray taken within six months of applying, or documented follow-up after a positive result; and the full B.C. Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum including its eight-hour in-person class. These carry extra cost and are usually done outside class time.
