Overview

The Writing and Publishing Diploma takes through the first stages of the writing process to the final post-production stages of publishing in a variety of formats. You will develop your writerly personae, hone you critical voices, and learn how to write professionally for multiple audiences. You'll take creative writing workshops, web publishing labs, book design studios, and professional editing classes. Upon graduation, you may choose to work in traditional or new media outlets, or pursue further studies in creative writing, journalism, marketing, or media studies.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Regular applicants need B.C. secondary school graduation or the equivalent, and English 12 with a minimum of 60% or an approved alternative; the program page does not publish IELTS, TOEFL or other standardized test scores. Applicants scoring below 60% in English 12 may still be admitted to first year under conditions: they are restricted from first-year English courses and must complete the English requirement, by retaking the course or an equivalent through Adult Basic Education or distance education, within their first year. Mature applicants at least 19 years of age and out of secondary school full-time for one year have the graduation requirement waived but must still satisfy the English requirement before classes begin. At least 50% of the program, including a minimum of 18 credits at the 200-level or higher, must be completed through Okanagan College.

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants: there is no fixed closing date. For a Fall intake the College starts taking applications at 8:30 a.m. on October's first weekday of the preceding year, and for a Winter intake at 8:30 a.m. on February's first weekday of the preceding year, then keeps accepting them until the seats are gone - so apply early. Apply through EducationPlannerBC; the fee is $30 CAD. International applicants: no closing date is published for this program specifically. The college-wide academic deadlines are 31 October for a January start (transcripts, English proof and deposit by 15 November) and 28 February for the May or July sessions (by 31 March); for a September start the College asks international applicants to apply as early as possible and before 15 May for the best choice of programs and courses. The international application fee is $100 CAD.
