Overview

Accessible Education - Fundamentals supports Level One students through an individualized course of study toward educational and personal development goals. Coursework covers basic literacy and numeracy, self-management and interpersonal ability, self-expression and creativity, workplace awareness, and skills for building greater independence. Students generally have up to four years to complete the program, with extensions possible under special circumstances.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to Okanagan College's Accessible Education Certificate - Fundamentals does not run through the college's standard secondary-graduation route; it is assessed on demonstrated need and readiness instead. Applicants must be at least 19 years old, or 18 and out of public school for 12 months, or hold a school-leaving certificate (younger applicants need a secondary-school principal or counsellor recommendation and Dean approval). All applicants complete a literacy assessment, passed at 90 per cent or better in accuracy and 75 per cent or better in comprehension, and a mandatory intake interview with the Admissions Committee. No English-language test score is required. Applicants must also show they can learn and participate in a group setting, are emotionally stable, are committed to learning, and have an identified learning difficulty, supported by at least two of: a psycho-educational assessment, IEP or school records, physician documentation, a CLBC referral, an instructor recommendation, or a community-agency referral.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC (a $30 CAD fee): Okanagan College sets no fixed closing date for most programmes in the 2026-27/2027-28 cycle. Applications for a Fall intake open at 8:30 a.m. on October's first business day of the preceding year, and for a Winter intake at 8:30 a.m. on February's first business day of the preceding year (exceptions apply); Practical Nursing's January intake opens at 9:00 a.m. on April's first business day of the preceding year. Most programmes accept applications until seats fill, though Nursing and Dental programmes set their own fixed or ranked deadlines on their own pages. International applicants also apply through EducationPlannerBC, paying a $100 CAD per-programme fee; the College publishes no institution-wide international closing date and directs applicants to each programme's own page. Admission is otherwise rolling. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
