Overview
The Supportive Care Assistant Micro-credential is designed to rapidly train new workers for the long-term care sector. Supportive Care Assistants work within health care teams to support clients. Learners complete six weeks of training followed by a paid non-clinical work experience placement. In their placements, learners perform non-clinical activities to support those working and those living in long-term care. The program allows learners to discover a new career, gain work experience and make a difference in their community. You will be immersed in topics such as professionalism, their role within the interprofessional team, respect for clients and families, and providing client and family-centered supports. You will also study inclusive practice skills when interacting with clients, families, and interprofessional team members; how to provide personal support assistance techniques; and the chain of infection as it relates to disease transmission and prevention.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires B.C. secondary-school graduation or equivalent, or standing as a mature applicant at least 19 years of age and out of secondary school for at least one year. No prerequisite course, minimum grade, or English/French language-test score is published. Before starting, applicants must provide evidence of a negative tuberculin test taken no more than six months before applying, proof of immunisations required by healthcare-organisation policy (or a signed exemption, TB testing excepted), and a criminal record check clearance from the B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General's Criminal Records Review Office. As of this review the program had not been scheduled; the college directs interested applicants to contact it for availability.

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC (a $30 CAD fee): Okanagan College sets no fixed closing date for most programmes in the 2026-27/2027-28 cycle. Applications for a Fall intake open at 8:30 a.m. on October's first business day of the preceding year, and for a Winter intake at 8:30 a.m. on February's first business day of the preceding year (exceptions apply); Practical Nursing's January intake opens at 9:00 a.m. on April's first business day of the preceding year. Most programmes accept applications until seats fill, though Nursing and Dental programmes set their own fixed or ranked deadlines on their own pages.
