Overview

This Red Seal apprenticeship gives registered apprentices the classroom technical training component of the Automotive Service Technician trade, covering the preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of light vehicles and trucks up to 5,500 kg gross weight. Training is organized into four levels, each seven weeks of full-time, on-campus classroom instruction at the Kelowna Trades Complex, with several intakes running through 2026 and 2027 and seats generally limited to 16 per session (32 for one Level 3 offering). Level 1 covers safety, electrical systems, and brake, steering, and suspension systems along with hybrid and electric-vehicle safety; Level 2 moves to starting and charging systems, transmissions, and gasoline engines; Level 3 covers electrical and electronic systems, fuel delivery, emission controls, and engine management; and Level 4 addresses automatic transmissions, diesel engines, HVAC systems, hybrid and electric-vehicle systems, and restraint systems. To enrol, an apprentice must already be registered with SkilledTradesBC and employed by a shop with at least one qualified journeyperson supervising their work-based hours. The program is built for working apprentices progressing through their in-class technical requirements rather than as an entry point for people new to the trade.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Automotive Service Technician: Apprenticeship is an apprenticeship-level program at Okanagan College: admission requires the applicant to already be registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC and employed by an employer with at least one qualified journeyperson in the trade. The program page notes that an applicant who is not yet registered can have their employer register them through SkilledTradesBC's online portal, described as free, simple and completable within a few minutes. No secondary-school course, grade minimum, or English-language proficiency test is stated as a requirement at this apprenticeship level; entry is administered through the SkilledTradesBC apprenticeship system and employer sponsorship rather than through the College's own academic admission requirements. Applicants must also present government-issued photo identification — a driver's licence, other photo ID, or a valid passport — to write the provincial and national trade exams; student ID cards are not accepted for this purpose. Applicants should confirm current registration status directly with SkilledTradesBC before applying to the program intake.
