Visual and Critical Studies is a four-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme at OCAD University focused on art history in its expanded contemporary sense, covering design, photography, architecture, performance and new media alongside painting and sculpture. Students may also take studio electives, combining historical and critical study with hands-on practice, and can pursue electives across art history, contemporary topics and the liberal arts. Unlike most OCAD undergraduate programmes, admission does not require a portfolio; applicants instead submit a writing sample. Admission is based on official transcripts, a statement of intent and a writing sample. Graduates work in curatorial, arts writing, publishing, arts administration and education roles, or continue to graduate study in art history, curatorial studies, museum studies or related fields.
