This program leads to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology and Justice, specializing in Victimology and Victim Studies, over four years (five with the co-op option), delivered in-class at the Downtown Oshawa campus, giving students specialized knowledge of victim experience, the issues victims face, victimology research that informs policy and practice, victim advocacy and social justice activism, and how victimology is shaped by media, law, ethics and the criminal justice system. The broader Criminology and Justice curriculum critically analyzes criminological and sociological explanations of why people commit crimes and how societies define crime and criminals, drawing on criminology, sociology, philosophy, psychology and law. The specialization can be taken with the Criminology and Justice program. A direct-entry co-op option offers full-time, paid work terms applied for directly through the OUAC application. It suits students aiming at careers such as corrections officer, probation officer, human rights advocate, or social services worker.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Tech University states no admission requirements specific to Victimology and Victim Studies beyond the OSSD prerequisites it lists and its general English proficiency policy. Applicants need the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U/4M credits, including English (ENG4U). Admission is competitive: last year's cut-off was 70 per cent and the expected cut-off sits in the low 70s, so meeting the minimums does not guarantee a seat. Applicants whose first language is not English must present, within two years of the intake, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Duolingo English Test 120, PTE Academic 58, CAEL 70 with no band below 60, Cambridge English Advanced 180 with no band below 170, or Oxford ELLT 7, or an IB Diploma or certificate with a minimum grade of 4 in English A, per the university's general admission requirements. The program begins in September and January.
