Overview
World Literature and History is an inter-departmental joint major leading to a Bachelor of Arts at Simon Fraser University, offered jointly by the Department of History and the Department of World Languages and Literatures in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. It explores relationships between world literature and historical study, and students plan their coursework in consultation with advisors from both departments. Lower-division requirements total 33 units: 18 units of 100- and 200-level History courses and 15 units of World Literature courses, including an introductory course, a writing course, and a course on literary theory and analysis. Upper-division requirements total 44 units: at least 24 units of History, of which 12 must be at the 400 level, and at least 20 units of World Literature, including a course on literary research and writing. As with other Bachelor of Arts programs at SFU, students complete 120 units in total, at least half of them through study at SFU.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct-entry applicants from a BC or Yukon high school must complete a minimum of five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 with a minimum grade of 70 percent, or the equivalent AP or IB course. Grade 11 prerequisites include English 11, Math 11 or Foundations of Mathematics/Pre-Calculus 11, one approved Science 11 course, and one Social Studies 11 course. At Grade 12, Course List A must include the required English course plus, because this is a Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences program, only one further List A humanities or social-science course rather than the two required by some other faculties, with additional List A or List B courses added to reach the five-course minimum. Admission is holistic, evaluating all approved Grade 11 and 12 courses with greater weight on List A; SFU does not publish a fixed minimum competitive average for this route. Diverse-qualifications and Indigenous-student admission pathways exist as alternatives to the standard grade-based route.
