Gerontology: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Admission Requirements: Admission normally requires a master's degree in gerontology or another discipline in which a substantial share of coursework or thesis research dealt with aging, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on the 4.33 scale, and there must be supervisory capacity in the Department of Gerontology to support the applicant's proposed research. The Faculty's general English proficiency standard applies to applicants whose primary language is not English or whose prior education was not in English, per Graduate General Regulations 1.3.3; SFU's published thresholds for that standard are IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (6.0 per band) or TOEFL iBT 90 overall (20 per section). Applicants must identify and contact a prospective senior supervisor in the department before applying, and must submit three academic references, a roughly 1,200-word statement of research interest, a statement of work or volunteer experience, a CV listing scholarly work, up to three writing samples, and unofficial transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended.
