Overview
This UBC Extended Learning award of achievement is aimed at newcomers to Canada and at people seeking their first Canadian job who want their English to hold up in a professional setting. The focus is practical workplace communication: the tone and phrasing expected in Canadian offices, business vocabulary, clearer pronunciation, and the confidence to speak up in meetings, deliver presentations and handle public speaking. The credential is earned by completing six courses, four required and two elective, each running six to eight weeks, for roughly 125 learning hours in total. Study can be fully online or blended with in-person classes, and all six courses must be finished within 18 months with at least 80 percent attendance. An English level of about B1 or higher is recommended before starting.

Admission Requirements: This is a non-credit professional development award offered through UBC Extended Learning, not a degree program, and its page sets no formal prior-education requirement. It recommends applicants have an English level equivalent to B1 or higher on the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), though no standardized test score is mandated. Applicants complete an online application describing their personal and career goals and how the award fits their expectations, along with a non-refundable application fee. Up to two previously completed English Communication Skills courses taken within the past year may be credited toward the award's six-course requirement, which must otherwise be finished within 18 months of enrolment. The award is delivered 100% online or in a blend of in-person and online study.

Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
