Overview
This MSc in Applied Animal Biology combines coursework and a research thesis, totalling 30 credits, in the study of animal physiology, behaviour, welfare and management across livestock, companion animals, research animals, wildlife and aquaculture, as well as the human-animal relationship. Students choose between two thesis weights: a shorter thesis paired with more coursework, including a limited allowance of senior undergraduate credits, which suits those heading into professional practice, and a longer thesis with a tighter coursework load for students aiming at doctoral study or a research career. Either way the emphasis is on producing work publishable in international peer-reviewed journals. Research runs through campus laboratories and off-campus facilities including UBC's Dairy Education and Research Centre at Agassiz, Fisheries and Oceans Canada in West Vancouver, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the BC SPCA, and the programme sits within the UBC Animal Welfare Program with a graduate certificate in aquaculture available alongside it.

Admission Requirements: UBC's Applied Animal Biology program requires MSc applicants to have a firm commitment from a faculty supervisor before applying, on top of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general threshold of a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC); individual programs may require more, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission given competitive selection. Applicants whose prior degree was not taught in English must submit a language test within 24 months of application: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no section below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall 90 (all sections at least 21) on the pre-2026 scale, or the Duolingo English Test overall 125. The GRE is not required, and the program asks for three letters of reference and transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended.
