Overview
UNBC's Interdisciplinary Studies MSc is the physical- and life-sciences counterpart to the program's MA option, built for research that crosses the boundaries of traditional science disciplines. Unlike the MA, the MSc is offered only as a 27-credit-hour thesis-based degree: students complete a graduate seminar and 12 credit hours of electives drawn from at least two disciplines before undertaking a 12-credit-hour thesis. Applicants must first secure a willing faculty supervisor and demonstrate that their proposed thesis genuinely spans two or more of the university's established graduate programs. The Interdisciplinary Studies Program Chair advises prospective students on tailoring their course of study and identifying appropriate co-supervisors across UNBC's science departments.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: UNBC's Interdisciplinary Studies calendar page sets no separate academic threshold and directs applicants to the university's general graduate admission requirements: for domestic applicants a minimum overall average of 3.00 (B) in third- and fourth-year coursework, and for anyone whose first language is not English, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no section under 20), PTE Academic 65 (no skill under 60), or CAEL 70 (no subtest under 60). On top of that general standard, the program requires an interdisciplinary research topic drawing on at least two programs described in the Graduate Calendar and a UNBC faculty member willing to supervise the work before acceptance. Applicants submit the Application for Admission with the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program proposal cover sheet, a one-page research statement, official transcripts, and three reference letters, at least two of them academic. The program admits for the September, January and May semesters.
