Overview
The Master of Applied Science in Civil Engineering is UBC's thesis-based research master's, normally taking about two years and required to be completed within five years of first registration. The opening terms are given over to coursework that builds the foundation for the research project, after which students concentrate on a thesis written under a research supervisor and assessed with a second reader. Specialisation areas include civil engineering materials, environmental engineering across fluid mechanics, geo-environmental work, pollution control and wastewater management, geotechnical engineering, hydrotechnical engineering, structural and earthquake engineering, transportation engineering, and project and construction management. Full-time students must spend at least one winter session on campus, and part-time study is possible. The department supports more than two hundred graduate students across its laboratories, and the MASc is the standard preparation for continuing to a doctorate.

Admission Requirements: Admission follows the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general standard of a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC); the GRE is not required. Applicants from institutions where English is not the primary language of instruction must submit, within the last 24 months, IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with no component below 6.5, TOEFL iBT overall 100 (reading 22, writing 25, speaking 21, listening 22) or the post-January-2026 scale score of 5.0 (reading 4.5, writing 5.0, speaking 4.0, listening 5.0), or the Duolingo English Test overall 130 (reading 120, writing 140, speaking 120, listening 120).

Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027.
