Overview

Discover the latest in the performance-based design of bridges within a lifecycle context. In this 30-hour, non-credit micro-credential course, you’ll learn about designing and modeling bridges to satisfy requirements of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA-S6-19), while taking the lifecycle design into consideration. Specific course topics include: - Principles of performance-based seismic design (PBD) of bridges - Applying PBD based on the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code - Hands-on tutorials on the nonlinear analyses of bridges - Lifecycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) and Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) concepts

Requirements

Admission Requirements: UBC Continuing and Professional Education's own page for Performance Based Design and Lifecycle Cost Analysis of Bridges states participants should already have knowledge of the theory of structures and reinforced-concrete design basics, with familiarity with Canadian bridge codes such as CSA-S6-19 recommended. No prior or existing UBC affiliation is required to register for this non-credit credential. Participants must be 18 years of age or older, and the language of instruction is English; the page states no English-language test score, no minimum GPA, and no portfolio or interview requirement.

Application Deadline: Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
