Overview
A performance master's in guitar for players who have achieved the necessary attainment and productivity at undergraduate level and give reasonable promise of further significant accomplishment. It works either as a final academic credential for musicians entering professional careers or as an intermediate step toward doctoral training. Rather than a thesis, performance candidates present two full-length recitals emphasising solo repertoire with representative chamber works, across a typical two-year residency. The curriculum covers introduction to music research, a seminar in performance practices, applied music performance, music electives and ensembles. Applicants need excellent performing ability and a Bachelor of Music or equivalent, including undergraduate coursework in music history, theory and guitar repertoire and history. Students perform in the state-of-the-art Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and other historic campus venues, and have twenty-four-hour access to a comprehensive computer music studio.

Admission Requirements: Admission is administered by UBC's Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS) under its published requirements for this master's program. B.Mus. degree or equivalent Course requirements: i. excellent performing ability ii. BMus degree or equivalent iii. undergraduate music history (120/121 and 220/221), theory (Music 100/101, 200/201 and 300), and history and repertoire of the guitar (Music 363) or equivalents. FGPS's minimum admission average is in the B+ range (76 per cent), and this program's page states no higher academic minimum, though meeting it does not guarantee admission in a competitive process. Applicants from a university where English was not the language of instruction must meet this program's published English-proficiency minimum: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6; or TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 with no skill below 4 on the 6-point scale in effect for tests sat from 21 January 2026 (overall 90 with no skill below 21 on the prior 120-point scale); or Duolingo English Test overall 125 with no skill below 115. The application also requires three letters of reference and transcripts from all prior post-secondary study.
