The Master of Arts in Music: Theory is a thesis-based research program offered by the Schulich School of Music, examining how musical works are constructed and how those principles generalize across repertoire. Coursework and research cover counterpoint, musical form, harmony, analytical models, Schenkerian analysis, mathematical models of music, theories of rhythm and meter, serialism, and popular music analysis, building skills in literature review, research design, and scientific communication. The program may also be taken with a Gender and Women's Studies option, offered with the McGill Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, focused on issues related to gender, sexuality, and feminist theory. Students have access to performance spaces, research and production laboratories, and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT). Admission requires an eligible bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 and English-language proficiency. The program admits students for the Fall intake only.
