The Master of Arts (MA) in Music at the University of Toronto is offered through the Faculty of Music in one of five fields: Ethnomusicology, Music and Health Sciences, Music Education, Musicology, or Music Theory. Ethnomusicology, Musicology, and Music Theory follow a research-oriented path of coursework, an essay, and a comprehensive examination; Music and Health Sciences and Music Education combine coursework with a practicum or major paper. All fields require proficiency in a language other than English relevant to the student's research and two letters of reference at application. Classes are delivered in person on the St. George campus. Admission requires an appropriate Bachelor of Arts specialist degree or Bachelor of Music degree from a recognized university, with an average standing equivalent to a University of Toronto mid-B or better over the final two years of study. The program can lead to further doctoral study or to careers in performance-adjacent research, education, or health-related music practice.
