Program details
Overview
Offered by UBC's School of Kinesiology, the MHPCTL is a professional master's in High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership that spans three years and 30 credits for experienced coaches and technical leaders in elite sport. It is staged: students first complete the one-year HPCTL graduate certificate and are then recommended for two further years of graduate coursework leading to the MHPCTL. The programme was designed with Own The Podium, the Coaching Association of Canada, the Canadian Sport Institute and national sport organisations, and is delivered in a blended model of residential periods and online teaching so that candidates across Canada and abroad can participate; it also ties into the National Coaching Certification Program, pairing academic credit with coaching qualifications. Coursework concentrates on interpreting and using research, evidence-based decision-making and analysis, balanced against applied coaching practice. Entry expects five years of coaching at national-team or Canada Games level (or five years as a carded national-team athlete), NCCP Competition Development certification, a national sport organisation's recommendation and a portfolio including an annual training plan.
