Certificate in Sociolinguistics

The Certificate in Sociolinguistics is a four-year, on-campus undergraduate program at Université de Moncton that groups courses examining language phenomena from a social perspective, addressing the multiple and complex intersections between language and society. It gives students the theoretical concepts, notions, and methods needed to understand these realities, along with the analytical tools, critical distance, and civic awareness to act on them. Learning strategies draw on a range of pedagogical approaches, including lectures, discussions and debates, language biographies, corpus construction and analysis, audiovisual materials, field research such as interviews and observations, oral presentations, research papers, and readings of scientific articles. Students also benefit from talks by guest speakers and graduate students in the department, as well as activities of the Centre de recherche en linguistique appliquée such as public lectures and round tables. Students may begin the program at the Edmundston or Shippagan campus for the first year before completing the remaining years at the Moncton campus, or study all four years at Moncton.
