Overview

This program leads to a Master of Arts with a major in sociolinguistics, delivered over a minimum of two years and totalling 42 credit hours. It is designed for students who already hold a Bachelor of Arts with a major in linguistics and wish to deepen their knowledge of sociolinguistics through advanced seminars and directed research. Coursework combines theoretical study of language variation and language in society with methodological training in sociolinguistic research design and analysis. Students complete a research project or thesis under faculty supervision, developing the skills needed to design, conduct, and report original sociolinguistic research. The program is structured to prepare graduates for further doctoral-level study in linguistics or sociolinguistics, while also building analytical and writing skills applicable to research, teaching, or language-policy roles. Admission requires a cumulative average of at least 3.00 on a 4.30 scale in undergraduate major coursework, in addition to the university's general graduate admission requirements.
