The Community Economic Development diploma at University College of the North is a two-year, in-person program that prepares students to support and strengthen community economies, with a focus on building local resources and capacities and enhancing community control and ownership in northern and Indigenous communities. The program begins each September and combines coursework in economic development theory and practice with applied, community-based projects. Students examine approaches to local economic planning, resource and business development, and community organizing, developing practical skills for working alongside community members, local governments, and organizations on economic initiatives. Graduates are prepared for roles supporting economic development, community planning, and organizational capacity-building in northern and Indigenous communities, and the diploma can also serve as a foundation for further study in business or community development fields.
