University College of the North delivers the in-school technical training component of Manitoba's apprenticeship system in the Carpenter, Industrial Electrician, and Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) trades. Apprenticeship training in each trade is organized into levels, ranging from two to five levels depending on the trade with an average of four, and combines on-the-job learning with in-school technical instruction. Apprentices spend roughly 80 percent of their time learning practical skills on the job with a sponsoring employer and the remaining 20 percent, typically four to ten weeks per level, in full-time, in-person technical training delivered at University College of the North's campuses. Apprentices earn an income throughout their training, and Manitoba's Apprenticeship Branch funds more than 90 percent of the cost of the in-school technical training component. The program is offered annually and leads toward journeyperson certification in the chosen trade.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry into an apprenticeship requires securing employment with an employer who has a journeyperson on staff and is willing to indenture the applicant; a formal indenture agreement between the employer and the apprentice is then arranged with the assistance of Manitoba's Apprenticeship Branch, after which the apprentice attends University College of the North for the in-school technical training component of each level.
