The Carpentry/Woodworking program at University College of the North is a 10-month certificate that provides students with basic carpentry knowledge and the skills needed to gain employment in the construction field. Instruction covers blueprint reading, use of woodworking machines, framing, concrete forming, roofing, cabinet making, stair building, and CNC wood processing, combined with a work practicum. The program runs from September to June and combines classroom learning with hands-on shop training. Applicants are expected to have good general health, eye-hand coordination, and finger dexterity given the physical nature of the trade. On completion, graduates receive a certificate and are prepared for entry-level employment in residential and commercial construction, with a pathway into further apprenticeship training in the carpentry trade and related residential building occupations.
