The Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education After Degree, English Language Arts is a Faculty of Education program for students who already hold a university degree and wish to qualify as English teachers for grades 7-12. Students complete English Language Arts as a major or minor alongside a second teachable subject, drawing on coursework in English Literature, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Writing Studies, Drama, and Film and Media. The professional component includes a five-week Introductory Professional Term (IPT) and a nine-week Advanced Professional Term (APT), supervised classroom placements typically taught in the student's major subject. Program length varies depending on how much prior university coursework transfers, and the after-degree can be completed at the University of Alberta or at a partner institution through the Collaborative Off-Campus Program. Graduates are recommended for teacher certification in Alberta and are prepared to teach English Language Arts to students in grades 7-12.
