Overview
The Software Option is a specialization within the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta, available only through the Co-operative education stream. Students build on foundational knowledge in computing through discrete and continuous mathematics, physical science, logic, and engineering design principles, applied to the development of software systems of varying scale. Students apply to the foundational first year of the Faculty of Engineering before choosing this option. As a mandatory Co-op program, students complete five paid, supervised work terms of four months each in addition to the usual eight academic terms of full-time study, extending the degree to five years, with course material supplemented by industry and research experience. Graduates work in software engineering, systems design, and technology development roles.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to this program is through the foundational first-year Engineering program in the Faculty of Engineering; students select this specific degree program after completing first year. High school applicants require English Language Arts 30-1, Chemistry 30, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 31, and Physics 30 (or their equivalents), with admission based on a minimum average across these five subjects that the Faculty sets on an annual basis. Applicants from other Canadian provinces or territories with equivalent senior matriculation coursework may also be considered. Postsecondary transfer applicants are assessed under the University's general transfer admission requirements.
