Overview
The Bachelor of Science with Major in Computing Science, Software Practice Option is offered by the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta. The programme is designed for students interested in all aspects of building software, with a broad range of courses developing depth in programming, algorithms, computer hardware, software design, user interfaces, project management and related business issues. As a Bachelor of Science with Major, the degree is customizable: students may add an optional minor or double major chosen from more than 60 subjects across the Faculties of Arts, Native Studies, Business and Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, allowing them to keep their studies broad or focus more deeply on a discipline of interest. The option is also offered as a BSc Honors degree for students seeking a more research-intensive path. Admission is open to applicants directly from high school, subject to course prerequisites in English, mathematics and two of biology, chemistry, physics or an additional mathematics course, plus one course from an approved list of arts, humanities or language subjects, as well as to transfer students.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants applying directly from high school must present Alberta Grade 12 (or equivalent) courses in English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, and two of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, Mathematics 31 or Computing Science 30, plus one course from an approved list of Fine Arts, Humanities or Languages-other-than-English subjects. Requirements vary by province/territory of secondary schooling. Transfer students are assessed separately. Applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must meet the university's English Language Proficiency policy.
