The Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Software Engineering, delivered through the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, begins with a common first-year sequence of ten courses spanning mathematics, science, computing, engineering principles, communications, and design; students formally enter the Software Engineering program after that shared year. Later coursework includes computing for engineers and software analysis and design. The program offers an optional 12-to-16-month paid work placement arranged through the Engineering Career Centre, along with study-abroad opportunities and team-based project work. It is based at the university's main campus in Calgary, Alberta. The program is intended for students interested in developing, installing, validating, and maintaining software systems, including those considering careers in telecommunications, manufacturing, or e-commerce, as well as students planning to use the degree as a foundation for graduate or professional studies. As an accredited engineering degree, it combines core engineering fundamentals with dedicated software coursework rather than treating software as a secondary specialization within a general engineering track.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Software Engineering has no direct high-school entry average of its own: applicants enter Schulich's Engineering (common first year) program and are guaranteed their choice of major, including Software Engineering, on completing all 10 first-year common-core courses. For Alberta high-school direct entry to the common first year, University of Calgary requires English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30 or Biology 30, with a stated competitive admission average in the low 90s. Other curricula and international applicants are assessed separately.

Application Deadline:For Fall 2027 entry, the University of Calgary opens undergraduate applications for domestic applicants on 1 October 2026 and for international applicants on 15 August 2026, both closing on the same firm application deadline of 1 March 2027, with supporting documents due by 15 March 2027 and offers accepted by 1 May 2027. International applicants follow the identical March 1 deadline; the university publishes no separate, later international closing date.
