Overview
This Bachelor of Science major studies land use, resources, facilities, and services, together with the physical, economic, and social wellbeing of communities, taking a scientific approach with an emphasis on environmental management and geographic information sciences. It is offered through the Faculty of Science and is also available as a BSc Honors degree. Students can add an optional minor from more than 60 subjects across faculties, including Arts, Native Studies, Business, and Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, or pursue a double major, designing a flexible pathway around one or two areas of interest. Alberta high-school applicants need English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, two courses from Mathematics 31, Computing Science, Physics 30, Biology 30, or Chemistry 30, and one elective from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages, or Math/Sciences; Indigenous applicants have a distinct admission pathway. Admission Requirements: Direct entry from high school into the BSc Major program (the Honors route is non-direct, open only after year 2 with a minimum 48 units and 3.0 GPA). The Faculty of Science requires a minimum application average of 70% across the 5 required Grade 12 admission subjects; admission is competitive and the Faculty's three-year admission-average trend is low 80s to mid 90s. This major additionally requires Biology 30 (or equivalent) as a prerequisite to register in program courses. Graduates of this BSc (or the parallel BA in Planning) meet the qualifications to become a Registered Professional Planner (RPP).

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
