Program details
Overview
The Urban Studies program at the University of Calgary is an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree examining the social, political, economic, environmental, and cultural processes that shape city life. Students explore topics such as urban planning, housing and homelessness, public safety, and sustainability through courses including introductions to cities, planning in the Canadian context, architecture and the future of cities, urban social geography, and geospatial communication and social-research methods. A co-operative work-placement option alternates paid work terms with academic study, an honours option supports independent research under faculty supervision, and a field-school option provides hands-on, real-world instruction. Offered through the Faculty of Arts, the program suits students interested in how cities function and change, preparing graduates for work in urban planning, public policy, architecture, economic development, municipal administration, or social services, as well as further study at the graduate or professional level.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from Alberta high school, per the program's own admission-requirements tool. Required courses: English Language Arts 30-1, plus four further approved courses (one of which may be an approved option). Estimated competitive admission average: High 70s. Admitting averages are calculated using four approved courses for early admission and the full course set above for standard admission. No test, portfolio, or audition is listed for this program.
Application Details
Application Deadline:For Fall 2027 entry, the University of Calgary opens undergraduate applications for domestic applicants on 1 October 2026 and for international applicants on 15 August 2026, both closing on the same firm application deadline of 1 March 2027, with supporting documents due by 15 March 2027 and offers accepted by 1 May 2027. International applicants follow the identical March 1 deadline; the university publishes no separate, later international closing date. Applications are not accepted on a rolling basis after the deadline for most direct-entry programmes, though a small number of programmes (e.g. Nursing) run further selection rounds into the summer while space remains. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
