Overview

This Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability Studies is offered at the University of Alberta's Augustana Campus in Camrose and approaches sustainability through interconnected economic, social, and environmental perspectives. Students choose one of three pathways, an Economics, Environmental, or Social route, and may add an optional minor in Management or Music. Coursework draws on environmental science, economic analysis, sociology, and philosophy, addressing subjects such as energy, food and water systems, and environmental ethics, and the program page describes evaluating challenges through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. A year-by-year course progression is set out through what the page calls major maps. Instruction is delivered in person on the residential Augustana Campus, and the program includes experiential components such as field studies, international opportunities, and community service-learning partnerships with local organizations. The program suits students who want an interdisciplinary understanding of how decisions in industry, government, and community organizations affect environmental and social outcomes, whether they are heading toward employment in sustainability-related roles or further graduate study.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Direct entry from high school (Augustana Campus, Camrose; Bachelor of Arts). The program lists a "Low 70s" program admission-average range. Required Grade 12 courses: English Language Arts 30-1; Mathematics 30-1 or Mathematics 30-2 (only one counts; the Calendar notes Math 30-1/30-2 is specifically required for this major); one further course from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English, Physical Education, or Math/Sciences; and two more from Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences. Fall 2027 application deadline (domestic and international): March 1, 2027.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
