Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Computing Science is offered by the Department of Computing Science in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta as a thesis-based research degree. The program covers major areas including human-computer interaction, algorithmics, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, communication networks, computer games, computer graphics, computer vision and multimedia communications, database systems, machine learning, reinforcement learning, robotics, software engineering, and software systems. Alongside a standard PhD in Computing Science, the department also offers a PhD track with a specialization in Statistical Machine Learning. Students undertake original, supervised research leading to a doctoral dissertation. Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the PhD in Computing Science, including the Statistical Machine Learning specialization, normally requires an MSc in Computing Science or a closely related field; exceptionally qualified applicants with the equivalent of a First-Class Honors BSc may be admitted directly when supported by a Computing Science faculty supervisor, with any background deficiencies addressed through additional undergraduate coursework. Applicants must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale over the last 20 half-courses. English Language Proficiency requires a TOEFL iBT score of 100 (minimum 21 per skill area) or IELTS Academic 7.0 (minimum 6.5 per band), or equivalent. Applicants must select a research area and name up to three potential faculty supervisors; admission is conditional on a faculty member agreeing to supervise. There is no direct admission into the Statistical Machine Learning specialization; students are admitted to the general PhD program and may seek an SML supervisor after arrival.
