Overview
The Master of Arts in Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary, thesis-based program within Media and Technology Studies at the University of Alberta, delivered on campus. It combines computational methods and theory with research and teaching in the humanities, addressing demand for Arts graduates skilled in computing for work in humanities, social sciences, and fine arts research, or in the digital economy. Students study how digital technologies transform research and teaching across disciplines such as history, literature, languages, cultural studies, philosophy, music, and visual arts, gaining hands-on experience creating, delivering, and analyzing electronic text and non-textual data and images. The degree can be completed with or without a specialization chosen from participating departments, including Anthropology, Art and Design, Drama, East Asian Studies, English and Film Studies, History and Classics, Library and Information Studies, Linguistics, Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies, and Sociology. No prior technical experience is required, as seminars build the necessary skills.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet the minimum entrance requirements for the Digital Humanities Program and for the area of specialization of the participating department chosen, if any. Where applicable, a minimum TOEFL score is required, as determined by the participating department. Applications are reviewed first by the Digital Humanities Graduate Committee and, where a specialization is requested, forwarded to the participating department for its own review.
