Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies with Honors is an honours track within the Native Studies major, offered by the Faculty of Arts. It follows the same core content as the standard BA in Native Studies, which covers Indigenous histories, traditional knowledge and heritage, and contemporary Indigenous experiences, while requiring a higher standard of academic performance and an additional research-focused component. Honours students pursue concentrated study in an area of interest, culminating in research work that serves as preparation for graduate study, such as the Master of Arts in Native Studies. The program is delivered within a small departmental community and gives undergraduates opportunities to participate in faculty research projects. Graduates of the program have gone on to further studies, including graduate programs in Indigenous Governance, and to careers such as heritage interpreter, Indigenous liaison, Indigenous relations specialist, policy analyst, and researcher.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: There is no direct admission to the Honors program from high school; students must first be admitted to the standard Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies and meet its general admission and high school subject requirements. Admission to the Honors program normally occurs at the end of the first year and requires a minimum 3.0 Admission Grade Point Average (AGPA) on 24 units of course weight together with a 3.3 GPA in all Native Studies courses taken; admission at the end of the second or third year requires a 3.0 GPA on all previous coursework and a 3.3 GPA in Native Studies courses taken.
