Overview
The Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Human Geography at the University of Alberta is a social science program examining the relationships between human societies and the built and natural environments in which they live. Students learn to collect and analyze data about individuals, institutions, and communities to better understand social issues and challenges, working through case studies and problem-solving exercises throughout the degree. Admission to the Honors major follows the standard Faculty of Arts process: applicants complete the BA Honors Foundation Year before applying to declare Human Geography as their major, which requires a minimum Admission Grade Point Average of 3.0 with an average of 3.3 or better in Honors subject courses. The major can also be completed as part of the standard (non-Honors) Bachelor of Arts, within a Faculty of Arts offering more than 900 courses across the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Graduates pursue careers in urban and regional planning, environmental management, government policy, and international relations, or continue to graduate study in geography or a related social science.
