Overview
This Master of Fine Arts with a specialization in Design is a thesis-based graduate degree offered on campus by the University of Alberta's Department of Drama, alongside MFA specializations in Directing, Theatre Practice and Theatre Voice Pedagogy. Students train at a level of competency intended to prepare them to enter the professional theatre industry, working within the department's performance, workshop, rehearsal and studio facilities, including the Timms Centre for the Arts and its production spaces. Admission Requirements: The Department's minimum admission requirement for the MFA is normally a four-year undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale, calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework (or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time study), from the University of Alberta or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution; applicants who do not meet this minimum but show exceptional scholarly, creative or professional achievement may still be considered. Where applicable, applicants must meet the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies' minimum English Language Requirement. Applicants must have significant practical theatre experience and submit a letter of intent, curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation, plus a portfolio containing examples of freehand drawing, and any other artwork or documentation of other theatre design work.
