Overview
UBC's MA in Theatre is a two-year, thesis-based program in which students pursue theatre studies through coursework before completing an MA thesis project. Each student develops research expertise in an area of their own choosing while being trained in the wider theoretical, critical and historical frameworks of the discipline, with close mentorship from core faculty. Faculty research spans dramaturgy, disability theatre, theatre and health, intercultural theatre and performance, modern drama, classical theatre and its modern adaptations, the reception of alternative theatre and cinema, Canadian, American and modern British theatre, and Asian theatre including twentieth-century Chinese and Japanese work. Delivered in person at UBC Vancouver, with access to a major research library and an active multicultural theatre scene.

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Master of Arts in Theatre requires the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general minimum academic average, the B+ range (76% at UBC); the program states no further degree-specific prerequisite beyond this. The GRE is not required. Applicants from outside Canada whose prior instruction was not in English must meet UBC's English Language Admission Standard, tested within the last 24 months: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5, TOEFL 5.0 overall with no section below 4.0, or Duolingo English Test 130 overall with no section below 115. The application also requires two references, transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, and a statement of interest.
