Overview
This program is a one-year, course-based Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning delivered on campus by the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta. It is an accelerated stream intended for applicants who already hold an undergraduate degree in planning and have professional planning experience, allowing them to complete the degree in three consecutive semesters rather than the standard two years. The curriculum covers resilient cities and regions, planning for northern and resource communities, advanced planning theory, and an advanced planning studio, together with a research methods course and two additional planning electives. Students complete a master's project, beginning with a project proposal course and finishing with a major project course, in place of a thesis. The program draws on the department's research strengths in community and regional planning, transportation planning, urban design, and winter city planning, and must normally be completed within three years of admission.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in planning (minimum 3.00 GPA, B) and at least two calendar years of planning experience; applicants with significant experience and degrees other than planning are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Required application materials are a Statement of Interest, two letters of academic recommendation, a resume/CV, and transcripts. Where English is not the applicant's first language, proof of proficiency is required, with an internet-based TOEFL score of 90 (tests before January 21, 2026) or 4.5 (tests on or after January 21, 2026), or an equivalent test score.
