Overview
This is a thesis-based Master of Science offered on campus by the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Students complete 3 units of graduate coursework drawn from the faculty's Critical Reading/Thinking and Background Knowledge core competencies, with options such as directed reading and seminar courses in the department, and develop communication skills through a required departmental communication course, with a further course available to enhance this competency. Up to 12 units of additional coursework may be taken with approval of the department's Graduate Advisory Committee. The core of the degree is original thesis research carried out with a supervisor and supervisory committee, culminating in a written thesis and an oral defence. Students wishing to transfer from the MSc into the department's PhD program follow a separate faculty process, and program length follows the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's minimum program length and the university's general time limit for graduate program completion.

Admission Requirements: Admission follows the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's graduate program entrance requirements: a minimum Admission Grade Point Average of 3.0 (a B average) on the 4-point scale, calculated on the last 60 units or two years of full-time graded coursework, assessed on a competitive basis. Where English is not the applicant's first language, proof of proficiency is required: an internet-based TOEFL score of 95 overall with at least 21 per section (tests before January 21, 2026) or 5 overall with at least 4.5 per section (tests on or after January 21, 2026), an IELTS Academic score of 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 per band, or a Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency score of 185 with at least 179 per sub-score. Required documents are three reference letters (at least two academic), a statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae, transcripts, and a Supervisor Confirmation and Applicant Funding Information form completed by the prospective supervisor.
