Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Education) is an online, part-time credential offered by the University of Alberta's Faculty of Education, allowing students to build knowledge and skills in a chosen disciplinary stream. Streams include Contemporary Literacy Education K-9, Elementary Music Teaching and Learning, Mathematics Education, Prison Education, School Librarianship, Science Education, Structured Literacy and Reading Science, Teaching English Language Learners, Teaching Students with Complex Communication Needs, Technology in Education, and Trauma-Sensitive Practice. For most streams the program length is one calendar year across four consecutive terms, delivered bisynchronously with an approximate workload of five to ten hours per week; select streams are spread over two years. All components must be completed within four years of first registration. Application open and close dates vary by stream. The certificate is course-based and administered by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

Admission Requirements: Applicants need a four-year baccalaureate degree from a recognized university with a minimum 3.0 GPA on the last 60 credits of coursework (6.5 on the University of Alberta's 9-point scale); for lower GPAs, admission may be considered based on relevant work experience under the Guidelines for Considering Life Achievement. Two years of teaching or clinical experience are required, along with proof of English language proficiency. Applicants must submit a letter of intent of about 1,000 words outlining how the program would benefit their current work or career goals.
